Do any of you have any regular susbstitutions for when you're craving junkfood?
For example, when I'm craving sweets I'll try to find an over-ripe yellow mango (better than candy, I swear) or some pineapple, or when I'm craving salty/crunchy, I make a bowl of air-popped popcorn with flax oil & sea salt. (Often the craving is cured by healthier alternatives, sometimes not :)

Wed, September 6, 2006 - 4:21 AMBaby carrots, cucumber, or lemon cucumber in balsamic vinegar.
Toasted almond slices rolled in (slightly heated) crystalized honey, coconut shavings, and dried pineapple
Stuffed Buttons: Button mushroom caps lightly sauteed in beef broth, filled with fontina cheese and scallions, or marinated artichoke heart and pine nuts, or cooked sausage, or shreded chicken and jalepeno, or ground beef, garlic, oregeno, and grated parmesan cheese, or shredded chicken, chopped peanuts, and pepper oil, or feta cheese with onion and dried mint, or leftover chili, or green olives and parmesan cheese, or leftover baked potato and chives with a little cheddar melted on top... you get the idea.
Stuffed Potato Skins: Same as the button mushrooms, but BIGGER. Any time you make anything with spuds that doesn't include the skins, cut them away whole, and freeze them. Brush a little oil on 'em and they back up really fast - an edible bowl you can season and fill to suit your own tastes - or to fit your leftovers.
My big substitution is lemon cucumbers, because you can take one from the fridge and eat it without any preparation (assuming you already washed it before it went into the fridge). Juicy, crunchy, great flavor, and not a bit of fat or sugar. A dash of any herb or spice works well, my favorites are lime and coriander, pickle juice and pepper, or garlic salt. -

Mon, June 18, 2007 - 8:33 AMYeah - I eat a bowl or so of Raisin Bran cereal or other high fiber cereal ... it fills you and cleans you out too ...
