what IS junkfood?

topic posted Mon, October 3, 2005 - 10:44 AM by  mella

So after a week of fried and fatty food, myself and my sweetie discovered -surprise!- we're both getting soft and pudgy! In an effort to stem the growth of our midsections, we both agreed to spend a week without eating "junkfood".

So we discuss breakfast, and, umm... so is fullfat yogurt considered "junkfood" because of all the saturated fat? I know the CornPops are... What about a waffle made with white flour? And, well, what about a burrito? Is tuna salad junk because of all the mayo?...

My criterion was empty calories = junkfood (as in, a lot of calories but little-to-no vitamins, minerals, complex carbs, protein etc.). But sweetie wants a definition to include things that have a lot of fat/calories/sugar/badness in general.

The problem is, a lot of the food we eat doesn't clearly fall in one category or the other in our minds.

hear is a easy rule to follow:
    if its processed....its crap.

and most "food" you probably eat is.
eat things that look like the item when it was living
    (plant or hunk of flesh)
    it is not junk food

yogurt could be considered junk food because of the sugar added. fat (healthy fats) are necc. for your body to function. refined sugar serves no purpose what-so-ever. other than making you addicted to the food and covering up the bad taste of all the preservatives and overprocessed elements of whatever you are eating.

all refined flour products are just a form of sugar.
burrito - did you make it at home? read what the spices are that you seasin it with if you get a seasining kit. usually msg or some form of it.

tuna salad - did you make it with regular mayo. then its junk! all mayo is: hydrogenated oils, eggs, preservatives, lemon juice and spices.

just as an experiment eat for one week just meat, fruits and veggies and see the "pudge" melt off.
try it for two and see what happens.

season with herbs, cook with cold pressed olive oil, avoid caffine and dairy(chemical full, processed form of sugar and fat) try to keep your fruits in the a.m. and the veggies in the p.m.

You could always use nayonnaise in the tuna salad...made with soy and non-hydrogenated stuff..I really can't tell the difference.

I really like your idea in the second to last paragraph. It seemed simple enough to set up a "disallowed" catagory and just stay away from those things, but it's turned out that sorting is -hard-! I nearly cried this morning when I found out that the peanut butter on my PB & honey sandwich had 25% of my RDA of fat...

So I think next time I decide to play this game I'm going to take at least part of your suggestion. Rather than have certain things outlawed and everything else ok, I'm going to reverse it: Have a list of things which I can eat that week, and anything not on the list is gonged. If nothing else, that should limit confusion.

Frankly, that's been the hardest part of this. Not eating things I want? A pain in the ass, sure. But trying to figure out what's ok to eat? Argh!

I'm curious about your last paragraph, though: Why fruit in the morning and veggies in the evening?

"I'm curious about your last paragraph, though: Why fruit in the morning and veggies in the evening?"

i say this meaning your personal morning and night. (like when you wake up is your morning)

fruit is a sugar and if you dont use that sugar as energy is makes you gain fat and the spike in your blood sugar level could lead to late night snacking.

i wouldnt worry about the fat in your peanut butter unless its coming from hydrogenated oils. make your own peanut butter. it will taste better, not have crap oils in it,and not have sugar.

i think you also need to have SOMETHING that you have whatever you want within reason and then everything else isnt such a pain in the ass to give up.

        my avoidance list:
        breads
        sugars
        margerine
        obvious junk food
        preservative stuff
        milk
        caffine

basically i feel best when i am having meat and veggies with some butter. i cheat, but most of the time i dont.
i think the trick of having the "BAD" stuff you love is finding a healthier alternative.

this past week i have been eating crap and i feel like crap from it. my dark circles are back...but hey...whatcha going to do when you have 2 dollars to eat all day.

Totino's 3-cheese party pizza and some 3-for-a-dollar fruit.

i was totally living on those totinos things this week.
            haa haa
and freaking ramen with egg drops and peas.

2 dollars for two people totally sucks ass when trying to eat well.

              curious
does coffee really add on pounds?

and- as far as i can tell in regards to the fruit in the morning thing- besides the sugar needing to be used up- is that in the morning hourse your body is still going through it's natural cleansing process and eating only watery things (fruit, juice, water, lettuce) till noon is (a 'food combining trick") aiding that cleansing process.
same thing when you hear people saying not to eat after 7 or 8 pm- (as if that ever happens, the boyfriend doesn't even get home till after 8-> this is a hard one)

I dunnow...I don't blame the coffee for my extra pounds. They put caffine in tons of diet pills...it could be that coffee does something to make your metabolism sluggish..by maxing out your adrenals or something..I am probably way off base here.

As far as the other stuff...I can swing the morning thing..but the no food after 8 thing is pretty tough to follow.
