Re: burritos
Wed, March 2, 2005 - 10:04 PMcall me crazy mexican but I think tacos/burritos can be quite healthy, depending, on, you know, stuff. like me, I think that carnitas burrito ise a good protien based lunch and they can stabilize my blood sugar and carry me all day long. whole grains (corn tortillas), protien (good lean pork), and veggies (onions, cilantro, tomatillos, hot pickled carrots). what can be bad about this? but I grew up on this and thought it was bad. now I think it is good. what do you think? -

Re: burritos
Wed, March 2, 2005 - 10:34 PMSure. Sounds healthy to me. You could sure do alot worse.
Here in Houston, they have a place called Mission Burritos
Either it is a California-based chain, or it is intended to imitate Mission-style food...So they have gigantic burritos with all kindsa healthy stuff in them. That place is the best place I know of to get healthy burritos. They are also one of the only places where you can get real vegetarian tortilla soup.
Then there are the taquerias that are on every corner (okay- not literally) With white flour tortillas and lots of cheese and lardy beans. Those things can hit your gut like a ton-o'-bricks and stay there forever if you are not careful. The old vegetarian me used to always request no beans in my burritos, because I never could tell what would be in them and how they would make my stomach react.
If you are a meat eater, I bet it is healthier to stick to the meat and veggies in a burrito and avoid all the heavy fillers.
I make this stuff that I sometimes feed the touring bands that stay at our place that is vegan (so everyone can eat it), somewhat healthy and loved by all.
It is my spicy chipotle bean dip...basically a communal meal in a bowl. It has several kinds of beans, corn, rice, potatoes, garlic, onion, cilantro, tomatoes, chipotles peppers and several kinds of salsa.
I serve it with chips and corn tortillas (if I am feeling extra generous, I will make the the tortillas)
It feeds everybody and causes little to no negative physical reaction (which is one of my gauges on whether or not something I've eaten was healthy)...kind of off the topic except that the stuff is kind of like burrito filler in a bowl, and it seems prettty healthy, although probably high in sodium.

Re: burritos
Thu, March 3, 2005 - 7:36 PMUm, this is going to sound so insane, but one of the most horrible experiences of my life involved eating one too many frozen burritos from gas stations on the road.
I'm just gonna stop there. -

Re: burritos
Thu, March 3, 2005 - 11:39 PMI have lived on frozen bean and cheese burritos. They were a part of my daily ritual for months...How else was I supposed to pay rent and and go to bars on $180 bucks a week. I had it all figured out. -

Thu, March 3, 2005 - 11:40 PMOh yeah, and not too long ago (before starting this tribe), I was eating them fairly regularly for breakfast.
What happened? Did you get food poisoning or something? -

Re: burritos
Sat, March 5, 2005 - 6:45 AMI'm with angelina on this one - fresh, homemade burritos are a staple around here. What makes them healthy/unhealthy is what you choose to put in them.
